Hybrid Visual Development

Exploring What Hybrid Workflows Make Possible

Hybrid Visual Development means combining traditional craft, digital tools and generative AI into one expanded creative process.

My work begins with drawing, character design, storytelling and a clear visual point of view. From there, I use different workflows to explore images, moods, characters and worlds.

Generative AI is one tool within a larger artistic practice, alongside sketching, painting, digital image-making, 3D thinking, animation and visual development.

What matters is not the tool alone, but the judgment behind it: vision, taste, intent, composition, atmosphere and knowing what serves the project.

For me, hybrid workflows are a form of creative empowerment.

They allow one artist to explore like a small visual development team, moving quickly through possibilities while staying rooted in craft, intuition and a recognizable artistic hand.

How Hybrid Workflows Empower Creative Vision

Starting Points

My own sketches, character designs, paintings, occasional photography and visual ideas form the foundation.

The process begins with craft, intent and a clear sense of what the image or character needs to become.

Controlled Exploration

Hybrid workflows allow me to explore new moods, materials, styles, worlds and levels of refinement.

The goal is not random variation, but directed transformation guided by taste, story and visual judgment.

Two Areas

The work is currently divided into two areas: Character-Based Hybrid Exploration and Cinematic Hybrid Development.

Together, they show how characters, worlds and cinematic ideas can evolve through an expanded creative process.

Hybrid Character Exploration

In this section, I demonstrate how original character sketches, paintings and designs can evolve into polished character concepts through hybrid workflows.

Across different styles and levels of refinement, these examples test lighting, texture, material, atmosphere and look and feel while preserving the character’s core personality, shape language and intent.

The focus is transformation with control: expanding a design into new visual possibilities without losing the essence of the original idea.

Design evolution

from scribble to fully realized concept

Character design has always been one of my strongest passions. This character began as a flat, graphic vector design: simple, stylized and full of appeal. When revisiting it through a hybrid workflow, the question was clear: could I translate this kind of stylization into a more dimensional 3D-like character while preserving its shape language, design finesse and charm?

Character Continuity

Once the character is defined, hybrid workflows make it possible to test how it performs across poses, expressions, views and contexts.

These sheets demonstrate more than a single polished image. They explore whether the character can stay consistent, recognizable and alive across different angles, emotions, props, lighting and situations.

From pen & paper to 3D

I love the process. This character, my interpretation of Hildegunst von Mythenmetz, started as a sketch created with mixed traditional media. Later, curiosity led me to a simple question: with these new technologies, could I revisit this design and push it further? I was genuinely amazed by what became possible.

Design transcended

What if an old idea gets a second chance?

My archives are filled with original characters that never received a final treatment. Some were too ambitious at the time, others simply disappeared into folders and sketchbooks. Hybrid workflows allow me to revisit these concepts, test their potential and see them in a new light.

Cinematic Hybrid Development

A vision becomes real when it can be shared.

A cinematic image is more than a beautiful frame. It is a story moment: directed through light, staging, atmosphere, scale and emotion.

Before a team can gather around a vision, that vision has to become visible, tangible and shareable.

Hybrid workflows allow me to develop and communicate a visual world more fully at an early stage than ever before.

Drawing especially from my work on Everlasting, this section shows how early ideas can grow into cinematic worlds: full of scale, mood, character, light and emotional direction.

For pitches, concept art and visual development, these workflows create a powerful way to shape, test and communicate a vision long before full production begins.

As a vision keeper, my role is to help a creative direction emerge, become tangible and gather a team around it. When the vision is shared, understood and emotionally clear, everyone can move in the same direction.

Production Note:

No AI-generated pixels were used in the final film!

Everything you see in Everlasting was built from crafted 3D and painted assets by the production team. The hybrid images shown in this section were part of early visual development, helping to explore mood, atmosphere, scale and emotional direction before the final production work began.

Key Image / Proof of Concept

This image became an early proof of concept for the whole process.
It showed me that I could translate my own vision into something cinematic: full of scale, atmosphere, emotion and story.

The comparison with the final film is especially interesting, because it shows how much of the emotional core was already present in this first visual direction.

A Personal Note:

For me, Hybrid Visual Development is about empowerment: what becomes possible when traditional craft, experience and artistic judgment meet new creative workflows.

These examples are only a beginning. They show how one artist can explore, shape and communicate visions with a level of speed, depth and visual range that would have been hard to imagine before, while keeping the human part at the center.
